Prayers & Squares Quilting Ministry
of the First United Methodist Church of El Centro

Our home page

         Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand made, hand tied quilt.  Unlike many other organizations that make quilts for charitable purposes, the purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts.

         Heavy threads are used to make stitches through the quilt layers and the ends are left so they can be tied with a square knot.  Individual members of the congregation finish these quilts by tying knots in the quilt after worship service. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said for someone in special need, who then receives the finished quilt.

         This is not just a gift of a quilt, it is a gift of love and prayer. Prayer is the purpose of our ministry. It is an affirmation of our faith in God and our belief in God’s power to comfort, strengthen and heal.

         The quilters and sewers of First United Methodist Church of El Centro’s Prayers & Squares Quilting Ministry meet to make quilts on the 2nd Saturday and 3rd Tuesdays of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in Fellowship Hall.  Visitors, sewers and non-sewers are invited to join at any time!

         Donations of 100% cotton fabric, batting, and sewing and quilting items are welcome, as well as monetary gifts as we do not accept payment for the quilts.

 "It's not about the quilt;
                 it's all about the prayers."

          Any church member can request a quilt for another person who is in special need of prayer.  We refer to the requester as the quilt’s “sponsor”.  For prayer quilt requests, please contact the church office at (760) 352-2942
